CHRISTA HUGHES – BEER DRINKING WOMAN
$20.00 on the door
Christa Hughes (formerly the Ring Mistress of Circus Oz and KK Juggy of Machine Gun Fellatio) presents Beer Drinking Woman - an intoxicating cabaret. Fresh from sell out shows at the Sydney Opera House, Adelaide Cabaret Festival and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Christa Hughes is back in town to perform her hit show Beer Drinking Woman for one night only at the Toff In Town on Sunday the 8th of August. With the mesmerising voice of a mermaid wooing sailor's ships into rocks and a dash of 1920s bravado, Christa takes us on the alcohol drenched journey of a "lush'' from the the tingling buzz of that first elegant sip all the way through to the hair-of-the-dog blues. Accompanied by pianist Leonie Cohen, they will perform her own liquor laced compositions as well as songs by Tom Waits, Frank Sinatra, Memphis Slim,Cold Chisel, the Tiger Lillies, James Shelton and more.
"She's exuberant, she's inventive and, above all, she kind of gives vulgarity a good name" - Barry Humphries
"This was bloody good cabaret with Hughes' dynamic stage presence and that gutsy voice, Christa is a mixture much like her drinks, straight up, intoxicating and eclectic" - Drum Media
"Hughes deconstructs cabaret and the diva concept and proves the depth and mettle of her comic and vocal talents" - The Advertiser
So, if you like cheap thrills and beer swills, come wet your whistle and sink another with the Dive Bar Diva.
"She is energetic and inventive but above all, she kind of gives vulgarity a good name." Barry Humphries
"No one has made drinking so seductive. She struts and prowls the stage like a 1920s screen siren and her voice can send shivers down your spine. Enchanting." Drum Media

BIG SCARY – ‘WINTER’ EP TOUR with GRIZZLY JIM LAWRIE
$12 + $2.70 bf = $14.70 online presale / $15 on door (if available)
This August, catch Melbourne’s Big Scary for special sit down performances of their latest seasonal release ‘Winter’. Embracing a new format for this slightly more sombre offering, Big Scary will be embarking on two exclusive headlining shows in Melbourne and Sydney in support of ‘Winter’, the second of four seasonal instalments.
A time for reflection, solitude and solace - winter and the restrictive nature that accompanies this mired season have inspired this latest release. Offering a sonic exploration of the drama and fragility of this barren scape, ‘Winter’ personifies this constricted and decelerated pace. Recorded in the first days of winter with Big Scary regular Matt Voigt in Syme's parents' living room, Winter’ is dominated by haunting soundscapes, lilting harmonies, and building emotion that fades to a bleak nothingness.
In keeping with this more passive seasonal offering, ‘Winter’ will be supported with a headlining sit down show in Melbourne at The Toff on Saturday 21 August with local support Grizzly Jim Lawri. You can also catch Big Scary supporting Little Red and Midlake this July/August.
2010 has certainly been a big year for Big Scary’s Iansek and Syme. Regular touring with Australia’s finest and international buzz bands (Florence and The Machine, Editors, Midlake et al), coupled with radio hits - have ensured that this boy/girl duo have collected a huge following along the way. With the ‘Four Seasons’ compilation due for release in February and their debut album slated for the second half of next year, 2011 promises to be an even bigger undertaking for the strummer and the drummer. FIRST AID KIT (SWEDEN) with DAISY M. TULLEY & GEOFF O'CONNOR
$35.00 + $3.30 BF = $38.30 online presales
First Aid Kit is Johanna and Klara Söderberg. In 2008, the exceptionally gifted Swedish teenage sisters caught the attention of music aficionados world wide when Fleet Foxes gave their nod of approval to the duo’s stunning version of ‘Tiger Mountain Peasant Song’. Audiences at some of the worlds biggest festivals have since been falling at their feet, and in a few short months it will be Australia’s turn to be captivated by their crafty melodies and warm vocal harmonies.
Although they may be 17 and 20, their old souls seep through with narrative lyrics and acoustic, woodsy, folk inspired songwriting. In 2009, they were handpicked to release their debut EP Drunken Trees through Rabid Records, a label owned and operated by The Knife. The EP was reissued soon after through Wichita Records to include their Fleet Foxes cover and three additional songs performed live in a Swedish forest.
First Aid Kit’s first full length album The Big Black And The Blue was released in early 2010, stemming the singles ‘I Met Up With The King’ and ‘Hard Believer’,both accompanied by beautiful, whimsical music videos. Proving their own material stood up alongside their much loved cover which has now notched up well over one million views on youtube, the album has been a critical success throughout the USA and Europe paving the way for tours all over the world.
Johanna and Klara will perform at the Brisbane Festival Spigeltent this September, along with an intimate shows at The Toff In Town in Melbourne on Sunday September 5 with special guests Daisy M. THE YEARLINGS - Sweet Runaway CD Tour with Heath Cullen
$15.00 + $2.80 BF = $17.80 (online presales / $20.00 on the door
Marking the advent of Spring and bound to bring a bit of extra brightness and joy to your ears, Adelaide roots/alt country duo The Yearlings will be touring Australia to coincide with the release of their fourth studio album Sweet Runaway (out on Mixmasters via Vitamin Records) on 9th August 2010.
The Yearlings consist of Robyn Chalklen (vocals/guitar) and Chris Parkinson (vocals/guitar & banjo), who have been writing and performing together for nine years, since first crossing paths at The Tamworth Country Music Festival. Their chemistry is remarkable, and like a fine wine, their musical competency has matured impressively on the vine. They have a command to their musical compositions that most outfits can merely yearn for.
Together Robyn and Chris combine a sunset voice and a heart wood guitar to make a river of sound that winds its way past the hustle and flows back into the good old country of this land. Softer'n a rabbit sheltrin in a holler, sweet harmonies and rich tremolo electric guitar, aged. Old. Just the right amount of haunting. The Yearlings songs rock, sad and slow . . . like a chair on an old wooden porch. Personal, soul-stirring lyricists, watching them live is like eavesdropping on an intimate conversation.
Catch them as they tour the country performing songs off Sweet Runaway (Heath Cullen solo support for all September gigs). ( link: http://www.theyearlings.net/ )
